Redshift Evolution of Galaxy Cluster Densities
The number of rich galaxy clusters per unit volume is a strong function of V, the cosmological density parameter, and s8, the linear extrapolation to z 5 0 of the density contrast in 8 h Mpc spheres. The Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC) cluster redshift survey provides a sample of clusters, the average mass profiles of which are accurately known, which enables a secure associ...

متن کاملBrightest Cluster Galaxy Formation in Low - Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We present the composite luminosity function of a sample of 17 low-redshift galaxy clusters. Our luminosity functions have been measured for an inner region (r ≤ r 200) and an outer region (r 200 ≤ r ≤ 2r 200) centred on each Brightest Cluster Galaxy. The inner region luminosity function has a significantly flatter faint-end slope (α inner = −1.81 ± 0.02) than the outer region (α outer = −2.07 ...
متن کاملPhotometric Redshift Biases from Galaxy Evolution
Proposed cosmological surveys will make use of photometric redshifts of galaxies that are significantly fainter than any complete spectroscopic redshift surveys that exist to train the photo-z methods. We investigate the photo-z biases that result from known differences between the faint and bright populations: a rise in active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity toward higher redshift, and a metal...
متن کاملLocal redshift surveys and galaxy evolution
We present observations of galaxy environmental dependencies using data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. From a combined analysis of the luminosity function, Butcher-Oemler effect and trends in Hα line strengths we find support for a model where galaxy properties are mainly set by initial conditions at the time of their formation.
